Biological Terminology

 -A-

Abdomen - The portion of the trunk located between the pelvis and the thorax.  It contains the stomach, lower part of the esophagus, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas and the bladder in most humanoid live forms as well as other species-specific organs.

Abrasion - A scraping away of skin or mucus membrane as a result of injury.

Acetylcholine - Biochemical substance, a neurotransmitter that promotes the propagation of electrical impulses from one nerve cell to another in carbon-based life.

Adrenal gland - The endocrine organs that produce adrenalin (epinephrine) in humans. They also produce many other biochemical substances (norepinephrine, and steroids). Nausicaan adrenal glands produce a unique odor. "Adrenal" can mean "near the kidneys", so it could be that the Nausicaan glands produce biochemicals similar to the human ones or simply that they are located near the kidneys.

Alveoli cluster - A grouping of tiny, thin-walled, capillary-rich sacs occurring closely together where the exchange of gasses takes place. The genetically engineered Suliban have alveoli clusters that are modified to process different kinds of atmospheres.

Autonomic system - A system that regulates involuntary action.

-B-

Bile - A yellow or greenish viscid alkaline digestive fluid secreted by the liver. Humans used to use the bile of black bears as an aphrodisiac.

Bronchial lobe - A rounded projection within a lung. Normal Suliban have three bronchial lobes per lung, but the genetically engineered Suliban have five.

 -C-

Cardio, Cardi - Combining form meaning heart.

Compound retina - A combination of more than one light-sensitive membrane lining the inner eyeball. The modified Suliban have compound retinas, giving them superior vision.

Creatinine Phosphokinase - CPK or creatinine phosphokinase, is a marker of muscular damage.

Cryo-, Cry- Combining form concerning cold.

-D-

DNA - Acronym for Deoxyribonucleic Acid, a complex chemical chain containing the genetic codes enabling the reproduction of life throughout the explored galaxy. Nearly each type of individual life-form has a DNA code containing information common to that species, and additional distinguishing information unique to each individual. For these reasons, DNA sequencing is often used as a means of positive identification between individuals, except in the case of a clone. A variety of species throughout the galaxy share a similar DNA structure discovered later to be due to a single humanoid species living four billion years ago which "seeded" planets with its own primordial genetic material.

-E-

Endocrine system - The system of ductless glands in the human that secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream or other body fluids.

Evolution - The natural process that results in inheritable changes in a population which is spread over many generations. The Suliban were dissatisfied with the rate of their own evolution and genetically engineered themselves to have superior abilities.

-G-

Genome - The total genetic content contained in an organism's deoxyribonucleic acid. Silik noted the close similarity between the human genome and that of an ape.

-H-

Hem-, Hema-, Hemo- Combining form meaning blood.

-I-

Interspecies Medical Exchange - A program set up by the Vulcans to share medical data and techniques among intelligent species.

-M-

Myo- Combining form meaning muscle.

Myofibers - The numerous threadlike strands that make up a skeletal muscle fiber (like in a leg muscle). Osmotic eel therapy "fuses" myofibers and thus is used to treat muscle damage caused by particle weapons.

-N-

Natural selection - A natural process that results in the survival and reproductive success of only the individuals or groups best adjusted to their environment, while those less adapted tend to be eliminated. The genetic qualities of those best suited to their environment are passed on to succeeding generations.

Neuro- Combining form denoting nerve, nervous tissue, and nervous system.

-P-

Prefrontal Cortex - Portion of Klingon brain, when hyperstimulated causes conversation to not make any sense.

Psych-, Psycho- Combining form meaning mind or mental process.

Psychological Profile - Complete psychological history required of all Starfleet personnel.

-R-

REM Sleep - In neurophysiology, REM (rapid eye movement) describes a normal state of sleep during which most humanoid dreaming occurs.  The condition is so named because the sleeper's eyes, though closed, will often exhibit rapid movement.

Reticular Formation - A system of cells in the medulla oblongata of many humanoid brains.  This area controls the overall degree of nervous system activity.

RNA - A nucleic acid that controls protein synthesis in all living cells and takes the place of DNA in certain viruses.

Rybo-Viroxic-Nucleic Structure - Long organic compound that is one of the key factors in development during puberty of many humanoids.  As such life forms grow older, RVN takes on additional viroxic sequences.

-S-

Septal Area - Also known as the septum lucidum, the triangular double membrane that separates the anterior horns of the lateral ventricles of a humanoid brain.

Serotonin - Biochemical substance that serves as a central neurotransmitter in humanoid nervous systems.

Somato-, Somat- Combining form meaning body.

-T-

T-Negative - A rare Vulcan blood type.

Thalamus - A portion of the humanoid brain, deep within the cerebral hemispheres.

Thymus - Organ in humanoid bodies, located anterior to the trachea.  The thymus is responsible for producing lymphocytes, known as T-cells, which are part of humanoid immune systems.

-X-

Xeno- Combining form indicating strange or foreign.

-Z-

Zymuth gland - A gland,in the left side of the neck the Axanar, which releases triglobulin into the blood.
