Procedures & Treatments

-A-

Accelerated Critical Neural Pathway Formation - Medical procedure that uses genetic recoding to alter the brain of a humanoid patient (This procedure is illegal under laws dating back to the Eugenics Wars.) The Federation ban on DNA re-sequencing was based on the argument that if genetically enhanced people were allowed to compete freely, all parents would feel pressured to have their children enhanced so that they could keep up.

Code White Resussitation - A Federation medical code for resuscitating an apparently dead humanoid life form.

Cortical Regeneration - Surgical procedure.

CPK Enzymatic Therapy - Medical treatment to limit the extent of spinal injury.

CPK Levels - A medical test performed aboard Federation starships used to diagnose cardiac damage.

Cryogenic Open-Heart Procedure - Surgical procedure used to repair damaged cardiac tissue using temperatures near absolute zero.

Cryonics - A discarded Earth medical procedure intended to preserve a person by instantly freezing them upon the moment of death. The body would remain preserved until the necessary future medical advances would allow the body to be re-awakened, disease-free. Although cryonics became popular on Earth late in the 20th century, it was abandoned within 50 years. In those early days, some cryogenically frozen individuals were preserved even further by sending them into long-term storage in space within orbiting satellites.

Cryostasis - A medical procedure commonly used to slow down a critically injured patient's biological functions, achieved by preserving the patient in a cooling chamber, thereby allowing more time to diagnose and repair the injury.

Cybernetic Regeneration - A medical treatment.

-D-

Deep Tissue Scan - Medical scan done as part of a post mortem investigation.

Denucleation - Process by which genetic material is removed from the nuclei of an organisms cells.

Direct Reticular Stimulation - Medical procedure in which electrical energy is applied directly to the nervous system of a humanoid patient in an attempt to revive neural activity.

DNA Reference Scan - Medical procedure to test and confirm the identity of an individual by matching DNA patterns with those on file.

DNA Re-Sequencing - See accelerated critical neural pathway formation.

-E-

Ear-Lift Surgery - Cosmetic surgery performed on Ferengi to make their earlobes firmer.

Eel therapy - The application of osmotic eels to heal muscle injuries.

Electrophoretic Analysis - Standard medical test run to analyze cellular components.

Encephalographic Polygraph Scan - A brainwave scan used to determine truthfulness during questioning.

Engramatic Purge - Medical procedure used to erase specific thoughts from a persons mind.

-G-

Garlic Soup - A home remedy for the common cold before its full cure was developed.

Gene Splicing - Genetic engineering technique.

-H-

Hematological Scan - Medical diagnostic study of a patients blood factors.

Humeral Socket Replacement - Simple partial joint replacement procedure.

Hyperencephalogram - Medical test that records and measures brain-wave activity.

Hypothalamic Series - Medical test used to determine hypothalamic function.

-I-

Inner Nuncial Series - A battery of neurological tests.

-J-

Jungian Therapy - Psychiatric treatment based on the theories of Carl Jung.

-K-

K-3 Cell Count - Medical test, if unbalanced can be indicative of Urodelean flu.

K-3 Indicator - A medical measurement of neural activity which corresponds to the level of pain being experienced by a patient.

-L-

Level-4 Neurographic Scan - Highly detailed neural study.  Much more thorough than a normal neural scan, a level-4 was intended to detect even very slight defects.

Lucid Dreaming - Form of self-hypnosis.  Lucid dreaming is a technique that allows a subject to take control of dreams.

-M-

Myocardial Enzyme Balance - Medical test used in cardiac surgical procedures.

-N-

Neural Neutralizer - Invented by Doctor Simon Van Gelder in 2266 the purpose of this device was to aid rehabilitation of criminals through the specific removal of thoughts related to their criminal acts. The device was discovered to have detrimental effects, however, if used without proper supervision and care.

Neurogenic Restructuring - Invasive medical procedure used by Mari authorities, intended to permanently purge violent thoughts from a criminal's mind, the process was not entirely effective.

Neurolink - Emergency medical technique employing matching neural pads which is used to stabilize and treat patients with severe brainstem injuries. One pad would be placed on a healthy subject while the matching unit was placed on the injured patient, thereby establishing a link from the healthy autonomic nervous system to the injured system.

Neuropolaric Induction - Medical procedure used to repolarize ganglionic neural sheaths in the brain.

Neurosomatic Technique - Alien medical procedure employed on planet Tilonus IV in 2369 during the inhabitant's effort to extract strategic information from Commander William Riker. The commander's Captors used this technique to create a delusional world which they could control, and in which Commander Riker believed he was an inmate at the Tilonus Institute for Mental Disorders, being held there on a count of murder. However, Commander Riker's subconscious mind incorporated into this delusional world elements of a play called Frame of Mind. This provided some connection to reality, which in turn, allowed Commander Riker's mind to create a defense mechanism against the neurosomatic process.

Neurosynaptic Therapy - Medical treatment used to modify a patients behavior through modification of neural structure.

-O-

Ocular Implant - Cybernetic implant used as a replacement for the human eye, successor to the VISOR.

Osmotic Eel - Used by Denobulans to cauterize wounds.

Resonance Tissue Scan - Medical diagnostic test used to screen for infection.

Retinal Scan - Method of confirming a person's identity by scanning the pattern of the eye's retina.

Retinal Imaging Scan - Medical test used to verify the presence of activity in the visual cortex.

Replicative Fading - A loss of genetic information occurring when an organism is repeatedly cloned.  After several generations of cloning, replicative fading can become serious, resulting in subtle errors creeping into chromosomes, eventually yielding a nonviable clone.
